  • Non-conductive gloves
  • Plastic conduit
  • Safety glasses
  • Ladder

Installing Fluorescent Light Fixture in Garage: 7 Effective Steps

Step 1: Shut off the Power

Start by looking for your home’s breaker so you can turn off the power. If the breaker is not fixed in an easy-to-reach spot, then you can use a stepladder to access it.

Next, you will need to find the correct circuit breaker for your garage, especially if it’s not labeled. Then, shut it off to reduce the chances of electrocuting yourself.

After that, walk to your garage and double-check to confirm that the lights are off.

Step 2: Dismantle the Existing Light Fixture

With the power off, you can go ahead and start removing the old light bulbs. If it is a regular fixture with screws, you should dismantle the dome first. Next, unscrew it from the wall or ceiling.

After removing the light’s hardware, the next step will be to unscrew the nuts of the electrical wires. Just twist the nuts anticlockwise one by one and then remove the old light bulbs.

Step 3: Install the Fluorescent Light Fixture

Now, it’s time to install your fluorescent light fixture in place. But first, you will need to decide exactly where you would like the fixtures to be installed.

If it’s a new position, you will then need to extend the wiring to the new position. Just make sure to run the wiring via an electrical plastic conduit from added protection.

Step 4: Drill a Hole

Next, using a screwdriver and a hammer, make a hole through the ceiling. You can also use a drill. Once the hole is in place, go ahead and plumb the wiring through it.

More importantly, be sure to make some marks on the wall or ceiling showing where to screw the fixture in place.

Step 5: Fix the Wires into Place

The next thing to do is to connect all the wires together with their right counterparts using connectors. Generally, the white should be attached to a white, the black to black, and the green to green.

However, you can use a circuit tester if you are not completely sure about the wiring colors. These testers are relatively cheap, so you should definitely get one.

Step 6: Screw the Fluorescent Light

Start by securing the wire into place with nuts. Then, using the screws provided with the light bulbs, go ahead and attach one of the screws to the ceiling.

Next, make sure the light is properly aligned to your garage’s layout. If the alignment is good, you should then attach the remaining screw.

But if the alignment is not perfect, it is advisable to unscrew one of the screws and align the light bulb once more.

Step 7: Switch on the Electricity

Once the fluorescent light fixture is already in place, you can proceed to flip the breaker back on. Generally, the lights will turn on if you wired everything correctly.

However, if the lights fail to turn on, then you should shut off the power and check your wiring once more.
